Career Counseling for Students

Career Center counselors help students with:
- Career counseling and decision making, including use of inventories such as the Strong Interest Inventory, Campbell Interest and Skills Survey and the Myers Briggs Type Indicator
- Writing CV's, resumes and cover letters
- Applying to graduate or professional school
- Finding internships, jobs and post-doc opportunities
- Interviewing for jobs and graduate/professional school
If you know of a student confused about their career direction, please encourage them to contact us!
Walk-In Counseling
- These are 15 minute question-and-answer sessions, available on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment is necessary.
- Walk-ins are held every Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM in the Career Center @ Lory Student Center in room 116 LSC.
- There are no walk-ins during the summer, but appointments are readily available by calling 491-5707
Job Postings
- Do you get job postings from your professional associations, alumni or colleagues?
- Do you have research or other positions available in your department that will help students get experience in their field?

Forward them to the Career Center and we will post them!
- The Career Center posts job opportunities online AT NO COST to either student or employer.
- By posting these jobs online, they are accessible to CSU students and alumni 24/7, no matter their location.
- This includes jobs in your lab/department as well as jobs with companies or organizations with whom you collaborate.
- During the 2004 - 2005 academic year, we posted 8800 full-time professional jobs and 2300 internships. These are local, national and international jobs.

of your choice. Topics include:

- Job search strategies
- Ins and Outs of Interviewing
- and other topics tailored to your class or student group
- To schedule a career counselor to speak to your class, contact the career counselor in your college
Workshops
- Please refer your students to the Career Center WORKSHOP SERIES each semester.

- Ins and Outs of Applying for a Federal Job (October). This workshop will help candidates navigate the confusing world of applying for a federal job, including how to write effective KSA statements.

Career Fairs
We invite you to attend our university career fairs to speak with employers who are interested in hiring CSU graduates. Often they have questions about the curriculum that Career Center staff can't answer, and we find that many employers would like to collaborate with the departments, in the form of presentations to classes or student organizations.
Suggested Assignments for Career Exploration
- Informational interviews
- Job shadowing. Similar to informational interviews but more extended and allows the student to follow someone throughout their workday.
- Online career exploration. Feel free to tailor this assignment to your class.
- Research a career and create a poster and/or give a presentation to the class
- Attend a workshop and write a reaction paper/present in class
