Elements of Effective Internship & Job Postings

Job Title:  Clear, short descriptive to indicate the scope and area of focus of the position (i.e. Software Development Intern, Cost Accounting Intern, Design Engineer, Public Relations Coordinator).

Wage/Salary:  Internships may be paid or unpaid, for credit, not for credit (for experience) or a combination of these.  If the internship is unpaid, this must be stated “Unpaid” in the ‘Wage/Salary’ area of the job posting. If the position is commission-based, this information must be conveyed in the posting (commission only, base plus commission, etc).  Employers who wish to post commission positions for current students and new alumni should refer to our policies and practices on commission positions and complete the online form.

Job Description:  Develop a concise position description that includes clear information about the skill sets, abilities, qualifications you are looking for and core responsibilities of the position (vs. duties), the value proposition of the opportunity for the student/alumni ~ what skills/abilities they will gain from the experience if internship.  The “gain” from the experience is particularly important if it’s an unpaid internship.  Our students and alumni indicate they are also interested in easy access to information about company culture, mission and values.  For full time career positions, opportunities for additional training and education and brief outline or web link to benefits are also helpful.

Tip:  Include differentiators ~ how your organization may be unique or different than your competitors for the same talent.

Tip:  Students are excited about information on demand so if you have a strong website or online resources about your company, culture, mission/values include your primary web link.

Application Instructions:  The application process may be set up directly through CareerRAM so that resumes are submitted by students through the system, saved to the job posting and reviewed online through your CareerRAM account.   You can elect to receive notification emails when resumes are submitted.

Application may also be set up through a link to your company website.  If there is a navigation process to get to the job to apply, develop simple, clear instructions.  Check to make sure that your links and navigation instructions work for the application process.  If they are too complicated or incorrect, potential candidates may become discouraged and not apply.

Offer email or online application option if possible.  Some employers still want to use fax for applications.  Many students have little to no experience with faxing documents.  Easier is better and greatly enhances the chances for your success in having a strong applicant pool!
