February 2008 Entries

On February 22 the Career Center took students on their first ever Career Road Trip. We loaded up the van and headed south to get the inside scoop on what makes northern Colorado companies tick. This day was focused on careers in business, so we made stops at Burns Marketing, Colorado Eagles, and Target and found all three companies had great internship programs and loved to hire CSU grads!

Burns Marketing had some great tips for students on how to stand out from the crowd and how to get hired at any company. They had a fantastically open, fun, and funky office with great views of the Front Range.

At the Colorado Eagles, we got a behind the scenes tour of the Budweiser Events Center and found out they have internships for all students and learned about how interns are involved with so many aspects of the Eagles such as marketing and promotions, journalism, and sports statistics. We also met with Event Center staff to hear about logistics and operations, event planning, and advertising sales for all the events that take place there.

Finally, we made our way to Target for some free pizza and an overview of Target's internship program. Here we found out that Target has a great paid internship program for a wide variety of majors both here on the Front Range and at their corporate headquarters in Minnesota. There's much more to working at Target than just selling goods!

If you missed out on this first road trip, don't worry. There will be more! Coming up yet this semester:
Trip 2: Focus on Natural Resources Careers - Thursday, April 3, 2008
Trip 3: Focus on Engineering/Technology Careers - Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Registration is open first come first serve with a preference given to freshmen and sophomores for exploring careers. But juniors and seniors looking to network and get the inside look into companies they want to work for are encouraged to apply as well. You won't be the first person to hand deliver your resume!

To get in on future trips, see the Road Trip Page. See you on the road!

I wanted to thank you again for all your help during my job search and resume preparation at CSU. I also wanted to share some good news--I just took a position with the University of Notre Dame as an Assessment Counselor in their Office of Alcohol and Drug Education. I couldn't be more ecstatic about the opportunity and feel very grateful to you for your patience and thoroughness as I prepared months ago for looking for a job upon graduating from my master's program. Thank you again and know your hard work was part of this success! -E
