Electronic Resumes

Most employers today offer job applicants the opportunity to electronically transmit their resumes via e-mail attachment or upload them directly onto a company's website.

Electronic resumes need to be more simplistic in design and graphics to ensure that they are received in the same format that they are transmitted. Here are some tips that may help ensure successful transmission:

  • Use a common or popular word processing application, such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.
  • Avoid using any pre-formatted resume writing packages or wizards.
  • Use standard fonts and avoid decorative graphics or formatting.
  • Find out if the employer prefers the cover letter and resume sent within the text of the email or sent separately as an attachment.
  • You may want to have an additional hard copy version of your resume (enhanced layout and formatting) to bring to the interview.
  • Save your documents under your first and last name instead of just "resume".
